test_03.jpg Tekkonkinkreet is one of my favorite projects from my favorite manga author Taiyo Matsumoto and even though I busted my ass on it, I could probably, now, do a much better job. Still the weeks (production was crammed into a next-to-no-time schedule) I spent tracing lines in the sky and blood splatters remain fond in my memory. 2008 Eisner Award Winner

Usually VIZ titles are designed to follow the Japanese cover but because this is a non-traditional title (which ironically means there AREN'T any flying ninja, superpower vampire swordswomen), I was able to (almost) do as I chose. 2009 Eisner Award Nominee, 2009 Harvey Award Nominee

test_02.jpg Note to self: making comics is really really hard. Drawing a single frame can take days--especially if your skills were weak like mine--and creating the story makes you (meaning me) feel buck-naked in front of a crowd of Judgey-mcJudgeAlots. That being said Automat is probably the single most rewarding (print) personal project I've done in the last few years.

test_02.jpg The majority of posts to the Korean adoptee mailing lists I am on that don't involve "let's eat Korean food" are from other adoptees doing research on, guess what, adoption. MAs, phDs, BAs abound about identity, feminist issues, racism, etc. I really, really, really did not want my MFA thesis to have anything to do with adoption but as an adoptee it's an utterly compelling topic, so I spent a semester in my first year doing a project on it instead. There--inner child--are you satisfied?

I worked for 9 years first as a webmaster and then as a print designer for a Japanese comic book and animation company. If you're curious, I can show you multiple catalogs, a bajillion ads, countless posters, brochures, pamphlets, a handful of 50' banners, more books, dvds, product packaging and nearly every kind of collateral one can think of (even a few direct marketing pieces). We were asked to wear a lot of hats and if we didn't already know how to do something we were expected to learn it. Most of this work, however, is at least a year old and to make space for new work, I've kept it off the web for the time being.
