An autoresponder will let people know you are on an email vacation so if they are expecting an immediate response then they know to call, IM or get in contact another way.

I'll send you an exciting Email Vacation postcard in the mail to prompt you to fill out the follow up survey (that's the only reason I ask you for your address). Experience email enlightenment... or just be angry at me for suggesting such a silly idea.
